Air Force Tech Report: Flight Simulators

November 13, 2019

THIS IS AN AIR FORCE TECH
REPORT IM AIRMAN FIRST CLASS JASMINE
VANDERHEYDEN. FLIGHT SIMULATORS HAVE
COME A LONG WAY SINCE EDWIN LINK CREATED THEM
ALMOST ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO. THEY’RE CRITICAL TO AIR
FORCE PILOT TRAINING. FLIGHT SIMULATORS CREATE
A REALISTIC TRAINING ENVIRONMENT FOR PILOTS TO
PRACTICE IMPORTANT SKILLS AT A LOWER COST AND
WITHOUT MAJOR SAFETY RISKS. OPERATING THESE SIMULATORS
COST A FRACTION OF WHAT IT TAKES TO FLY A
REAL AIRCRAFT. FOR EXAMPLE THE F-15 C
EAGLE TRAINING SIMULATOR OPERATES AT LESS THAN ONE
PERCENT OF THE COST OF A REAL JET. THEY EVEN HAVE THE ABILITY
TO SAFELY RECREATE EMERGENCY SITUATIONS THAT
ARE TOO RISKY TO PERFORM IN AN ACTUAL FLIGHT. THE AIR FORCE TRAINS DAILY
TO MAKE SURE IT’S READY FOR ANY CHALLENGE, AND
THESE SIMULATORS HELP PROVIDE THAT READINESS.
THIS HAS BEEN AN AIR FORCE TECH REPORT IM AIRMAN
FIRST CLASS JASMINE VANDERHEYDEN.
