The t-55 is a riding shit box. Even the soviet tank crews didn't like it.

  • Reply DudeInWalmart July 26, 2019 at 9:08 am

This is like the plate shoot I went last night. I was loosing badly with my 1940's 1911. When I switch to my buddy's 1911 with modern sights I ended placing 1st.
Modern tech does make a difference.

100 mm cannon has good penetration values,in the right situations it can disable and destroy modern vehicles.

These tanks are present in the majority of ex-soviet countries and are mainly used for training purposes. Actually, Romania (as they are present in this video) declared 1 or 2 years ago that they will buy another 200 Leopard 2 tanks. Even so, why not train with them, maintain them, and God forbid, use them? As of Wikipedia numbers, they momentarily have around 300 TR-85 Bison some of them which are top notch to NATO standards (and is actually a quite capable tank!), over 400 T55, and they will get another 200 Leopards. If the shit hits the fan and I was a Romanian, I would really like the whole 900+ tanks to defend me and Europe, rather than be picky. A fucking projectile is still a projectile, believe it or not, those things still pack a punch.

Ancient weapons but it can do what it was meant to and that is to destroy and kill and get destroyed

  • Reply Mihai Sorin July 26, 2019 at 9:08 am

  • Reply nimmivids July 26, 2019 at 9:08 am

Those "ancient" 100mm sluggers will ruin most modern vehicles except the heaviest of MBTs.

  • Reply craby man July 26, 2019 at 9:08 am

its a heavily modified T-55, its not as shit as it might seem since it has modern optics and ammo (still pretty shit though)

  • Reply Emanuel Fernán July 26, 2019 at 9:08 am

I don't think they are ancient. They seem to have aged considerably better than American and Western European tanks.

  • Reply Dalekov July 26, 2019 at 9:08 am

I love to see the good old tanks

  • Reply Docter Yoda July 26, 2019 at 9:08 am

    To the people claiming that these ancient tanks are still capable in anything but the infantry support role;
I would look up the Battle of 73 Eastings, where Iraqi T-72 export models (more advanced than T-55) got slaughtered by American M1A1 Abrams' (less advanced than many U.S. frontline models today (M1A2)).

P.S. I get that the Iraqi T-72s were inferior to the Soviet versions of the T-72, but the export T-72 is still superior to most T-55s.

As "ancient" as it might be, those tanks still pack 100mm gun and looks very maintained. It just like an AK, old but reliable!

  • Reply rwsthedemonking July 26, 2019 at 9:08 am

Look someone dusted off the museum pieces. I showed this to my dad he said it took him back to training when they would use t-55s for target practice back in the 70s.

  • Reply Hour Bee July 26, 2019 at 9:08 am

A couple Abrams and a well trained crew can knockout all of those T55's

  • Reply Expliteron Boom July 26, 2019 at 9:08 am

  • Reply Shane K July 26, 2019 at 9:08 am

You’d think with modern computer targeting system for the main gun, they’d still hold their own, I doubt most modern tanks could take direct hits from another tank round could they?

  • Reply yomaster12345 July 26, 2019 at 9:08 am

T-55 modernized is still pretty good. The thing that would make a 1950s T-55 inferior to a modern tank is mostly:
    -ammunition type
    -quality of equipment(optics, engines, etc)
-mechanically operated turret as opposed to hand cranked
    -stabilization for the turret
A modernized T-55 would theoreticall have stabilization, improved armor(limited), upgraded optics to include thermals, electric turret rotation, improved ammunition, stronger and more reliable engines.

Don't get me wrong it's still an old ass tank but with proper upgrades it's still a pretty decent fighting vehicles that, with the right ammunition, can penetrate all modern tanks with the right angle.
The difference between a T-55 and say something like a T-72 is it's resistance to IFV cannons and anti-tank weapons. A T-72 can take 30mm rounds all day but most APDFS 30mm rounds will go straight through the sides of a T-55. Likewise, a T-72 can take frontal hits to high penetrator AT and withstand light AT(think LAW) from the sides but a T-55 is vulnerable from all angles to these things.

So while the T-55 is no Abrams, Challenger, T-80, etc, it is still a potent infantry killer and can be useful in challenging the hordes of BTRs and BMPs the Russians would throw at them. In a support role the T-55 could be a good compliment to stronger T-72s as support and recon, able to effectively support the flanks of tank battalions without risking higher value tanks to ambush and flanking maneuvers.
