September 20, 2019

THE SHIPS OF MILITARY
SEALIFT COMMAND KEEP THE FLEET OPERATIONAL BY
KEEPING IT FED AND FUELED. PETTY OFFICER KELBY
SANDERS TAKES US ABOARD ONE OF MSC’S KAISER-CLASS
REPLENISHMENT SHIP TOSHOW US HOW THEY KEEP THE
SHIPS STOCKED AND READY TO GO. HOW DOES A NAVY SHIP STAY
AT SEA FOR SEVERAL MONTHS WITH ONLY A LIMITED
AMOUNT OF SUPPLIES? THE ANSWER, A DYNAMIC
GLOBAL FORCE OF CIVILIAN MARINERS! “OUR IMPORTANCE IS WE CAN
KEEP THE NAVY ON STATION. WE CAN KEEP THEM
IN THE FIGHT. SO THEY HAVE TO WORRY
ABOUT PULLING INTO PORT AND GETTING THE FUEL
AND GETTING THE FOOD. WE’LL BRING IT TO THEM.” THE MILITARY SEALIFT
COMMAND GOES WHEREVER THE NAVY’S FLEETS OPERATE
TO DELIVER SUPPLIES, FUEL AND ANY OTHER
MISSION-CRITICAL COMPONENTS THE FIGHTING
SHIPS MIGHT NEED. USNS KANAWHA, CONDUCTS
UNDERWAY REPLENISHMENTS BY CONNECTING FUEL AND CARGO
LINES TO THE RECEIVING SHIP OR BY AIRLIFTING
CARGO BY HELICOPTER.
