MN National Guard Conducts Largest Ever Rail Movement Of Equipment

OVER 2,000 PIECES OF MILITARY EQUIPMENT FROM THE MINNESOTA NATIONAL GUARD ARE BEING LOADED THIS WEEK ONTO RAIL CARS IN THE LARGEST EQUIPMENT RAIL MOVEMENT EVER. THE EQUIPMENT WILL TRAVEL TO FORT HOOD, TEXAS WHERE IT WILL BE USED IN A TRAINING EXERCISE. REPORTER RACHEL JOHNSON HAS MORE. >> Reporter: IF YOU'RE DRIVING NEAR LITTLE FALLS THIS WEEK, YOU MIGHT NOTICE SOMETHING A LITTLE UNUSUAL. THE MINNESOTA NATIONAL GUARD HAS BEEN BUSY LOADING OVER 2,000 MILITARY VEHICLES AND PIECES OF MILITARY EQUIPMENT ONTO TRAIN CARS TO BE TRANSPORTED ACROSS THE UNITED STATES. >> WE'VE HAD PEOPLE SETTING UP LAWN CHAIRS AND UMBRELLAS, CIVILIANS THAT HAVE SAT DOWN AND WATCHED US AND THEY SEEM TO BE PRETTY EXCITED. SO IT'S GOTTEN A FAIR AMOUNT OF ATTENTION. >> Reporter: THE MILITARY EQUIPMENT WILL TRAVEL TO FORT HOOD IN TEXAS WHERE IT WILL BE APPROXIMATELY UNTIL THE END OF SUMMER AND IT WILL MAKE THE TRIP BACK. PERSONNEL HAVE BEEN BUSY SINCE LAST WEEK LOADING OVER 475 TRAIN CARS WITH HEAVY EQUIPMENT. >> WE'RE DOING TEN TRAINS, ABOUT 45 TO 50 CARS PER TRAIN AND SOMEWHERE AROUND 160 PIECES PER TRAIN. >> Reporter: THE EQUIPMENT WILL BE USED IN AN EXPORTABLE COMBAT TRAINING EXERCISE THAT WILL INCLUDE TESTING OF OVER 5, 200 SOLDIERS FROM THE FAMED 34th RED BULL INFANTRY DIVISION. >> WE USUALLY PRACTICE LIKE WE WILL BE DEPLOYED. WE'LL BE DOING THINGS THAT WILL BE PUT UP BY COMMANDERS, SOMETIMES WITH SUPPORT FROM THEM, SOMETIMES THE DEFENSE WILL CREATE A SUPPORT AREA. >> Reporter: THE RAIL MOVEMENT TRAININGS AT FORT HOOD WILL ALLOW SOLDIERS TO MEET FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS AND BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING THAT LIES AHEAD. >> YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO BE HITTING US DOWN THE ROAD, SO TRAINING IS REALLY IMPORTANT AND SAFETY IS NUMBER ONE RULE FOR US.
