N.Korea calls the S.Korea-U.S. military drills a war rehearsal, demanding cancellation. Why?

July 24, 2019

North Korea's warning came only 16 days after US president ultra made a symbolic gesture by setting foot in North Korea becoming the first sitting American leader to do so Pyongyang threatened Beth should Washington push ahead with its planned joint military exercise with Seoul it will negatively affect efforts to resume work level denuclearization tops it's actually nothing new for decades the North has urged South Korea and the u.s. to halt their joint military drills the topic was high on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's agenda when he came to Singapore for his first face-to-face meeting with President Trump last year then why is this a session of military exercises such a big deal to North Korea Pyongyang perceives the drills as a threat calling them rehearsals for invasion take a look deeper at the regime wants to see a reduction of the hundreds of thousands of US troops deployed here in South Korea a wholesale departure would be even better for them Trump vow to indefinitely hauled major military drills with South Korea following a summit with Kim last June in efforts to boost the momentum for dialogue with the north but a smooth caught even Pentagon by surprise because the exercises are deemed crucial for military readiness and effectiveness on the peninsula with the two Koreas still technically at war many analysts had expressed concerns at that time that a suspension of the drills will lead to a significant degradation in u.s. and South Korean warfighting readiness combined military exercises like HD freedom Guardian and key resolve have annually provided the two allies indispensable opportunities to simulate a coordinated response to a potential military invasion and advise war plans it has been a symbol of US commitment to his alliance with South Korea but instead of scrapping them altogether the militaries of South Korea the US have agreed to scale back the joint exercises and one of the new smaller drills that's later for this coming August is 19 to May which the North recently denounced with North Korea's warning in mind it seems now that Seoul and Washington will likely drop the word domain which means Alliance and English there can be a number of reasons why North Korea has suddenly started pressuring South Korea and the u.s. again but the most likely intention behind the latest warning is to gain the upper hand ahead of the planned Pyongyang Washington working-level talks it has been the case before any major talks on denuclearization in the past the North using the joint drills as leverage and negotiations claiming that they're a threat to your regime security Pyongyang may be urging Washington to do more in exchange for the halted missile testing and its purported closure of a weapons testing site at pongetti before the two sides engage in further dialogue if North Korea ends up demanding a complete cancellation of military exercises as a precondition to the working-level talks well it seems like the dialogue momentum might quickly lose speed again

SK can have military exercises all they want, to protect themselves not just NK, but other countries too, especially with the history of China and Japan invading Korea in the past lol

Most, in the States, don't agree with the scaling back of joint-military exercises to pacify North Korea. Trump's relationship with Kim Jong Un is making us very uneasy. Many Americans are horrified when Trump sings his praises while we have Otto Warmbier's parents suffering so. What is done to one, is done to all. Citizens have a long memory of all who suffered and sacrificed during the war even if Trump does not.

Kim is just realizing he is afraid of Trump and the power behind the American military. Lol. Communism governments don't work in the 21st century. He cannot clean his dirty money anymore.

The South Korean and the U.S. militaries should keep up the exercises. The alliance between South Korea and the U.S. is important. Hopefully after trump is replaced by an actual President that understands foreign diplomacy and the meaning of democracy, the situation with America's true allies will stabilize and be brought back to normalcy.
In the meantime I hope South Korea will keep up it's strength and belief in democracy. 💜

Even if North K. got used to joint exercises so far, Kim knows that absence of strong disapproval might seem like he accepted them, so he always reacts.
The purpose of drills hasn't stopped to exist, so objectively it would be careless to permanently cancel absolutely all of them. I read the major part will be computer simulations.

Last thing anyone wants is a full scale war, but I do not trust NK at all. I’m not sure how to feel about scaling back joint exercises.
