"Top Gun" was created because MIGs piloted by brave Nationalist freedom fighters whooped the Americans ass over the skies of Vietnam.

In the forties , average age of a pilot was 21 y/o

  • Reply Fuzzy Butkus July 23, 2019 at 10:24 am

I thank the pilots but the people on the ground are the one I’m most grateful. No fanfare but a job just as important without the recognition.Young men and woman sacrificing a large part of their and their families life to keep us free.

I remember "Hose". I was his Yeoman back in the day. He always complained about the Navy not paying enough to make a living, meanwhile he drove a late model gold-colored corvette. I think he was envious of me because I drove a Mustang 5.0L GT red convertible and the only one with a car phone in it. lol. Good times at TOPGUN though. I got to fly in an A4 Skyhawk they used as MIGs.

I would take any European pilot over an American pilot any day.

By was browsing the book store at a store in the Phoenix Airport for books to read on a long flight. I picked up AnUncaged Eagle by Col Richard "Dick" Toliver USAF,  one of the first black F-15 Eagle pilots, this guy has a impressive record and a pilot he speaks on the many white people who helped him as well as the racism that we still refuse to see today . I noticed  the book was signed in the cover so i check the other books they were all signed by the author. I wanted to be a fighter pilot myself i am grateful to have this book that is basically autobiographical in nature.

+KutWrite, +Andre Wells I suspect that Mr. Wells knew what he was doing, but not with any disrespect to the efforts of your posting or the NWFS, only to avail himself of the opportunity to pass along and share some historical information to aviation enthusiasts and history buffs. Have a great day.

Did you know that the first top gunner competition took place in May 1949 most of the pilots were flying F-80 Shooting Stars and F-84 Thunderjets. At this first competition there were four Tuskegee Airmen flying their P-47N Thunderbolts?  The four man Tuskegee team consisted of captain Alva Temple, First Lieutenants Harry Stewart, James H. Harvey, Halbert Alexander of the  332nd Fighter Group, Godman Field Kentucky. They even had their own maintenance staff lead by staff Sargent Buford Johnson. About a year ago i was traveling to Arizona and picked up a book at the bookstore at Midway airport that was written and signed by Colonel Richard Dick Toliver, the books titled was ( UNCAGED EAGLE ). Mr Toliver who also attended Tuskegee was a decorated combat pilot and one of the first black F-15 pilots made mention of this little known fact in his book. Its a great read by a unknown  hero. In the book he says that the black pilots were using outdated aircraft in the competition and still won the competition. In my opinion this was embarrassing to the top brass to the point where they did not know what to do, as they brass did not want the black guys from Tuskegee to be the winners. The winners had to wait i think over 15 yrs to get their awards or winners trophy. In 1954 the school was renamed " USAF Fighter Weapons School. In my opinion this is a great testimony to a American school that has a long history of impressive achievements that this nation will not acknowledge. I am ashamed to this day Jim Crow still exist, whats the harm in telling the world that pilots from Tuskegee University won the first top gun competition?    ref page 229 uncaged eagle.

Liked it, but will contest the last line.  A fighter pilot does not have to RETIRE at age 42.  Maybe not fly the specific aircraft, but does not have to leave the service.

Of all the billions of videos on the internet, I can't say that I'm physically in this one, BUT I was there!!!!! I was stationed at the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego from 1989-1993 as a Plane Captain and Aviation Structural Mechanic. I knew all the pilots that were interviewed. They were Top Gun instructor pilots, I was a low ranking Plane Captain who launched, recovered, and maintained their aircraft. Some Top Gun pilots were arrogant dicks, some were silently professional, and some were down right good people who would buy you beers and connect with you. I met my wife here….. just over 20 years ago….we are still together with 4 kids (aged 18, 16, 13, and 11). We had a TRUE TOP GUN ROMANCE!!!!! Tom Cruise can suck it!!!!!!!!

With all due respect the first battlefeild is in the sky. And the consequences are mostly the same in the air as they are on the ground. The fact that U.S forces will not even deploy troops unless the air space is under U.S control may make you rethink that statement. The air force has no support. The ground forces will not even deploy until the air force has even won their war. Make no mistake in modern combat air superiority is the war.

I love how politically incorrect this video is as of now lol. And F-18s are better than F-14s. Not only that but the guy said the F-14s were the most advanced in the world but he was dead wrong because of the fact that there were F-18s

Got to turn a few screws, change drip pans, stand hangar watch, and washed a few Tomcats while in VF-101. Glad I got to spend some time with the bird even though I never got backseat-qual'd as a Photo guy. Among many photo assignments, I covered a memorable AirLant hangar ceremony on the F-14D in '98, East Coast Tomcat bigshots. Great times.
Take care & best to you as well.

What was the exact airdate of this Inside Edition segment? I was probably in NTC Orlando, FL at the time. Was an Airman E3 on CVN-69. Before I ended my 8 yr stint in the Navy I was in VF-101 TARPS for 3 yrs. Did 2 wks at NAS Fallon with the squadron but as a body for an E4 TAD billet at the base gym, lol. Should have spent more time taking photos while in the squadron! It was great to have been part of the Naval Aviation "brown shoe" community.

Do you by chance know what really happened to Lt. Cmdr. Scott Speicher when he was shot down on Jan. 17, 1991 in Desert Storm? Was it really a MIG-25 that shot him down? I remember his story but wanted to ask someone who might know for sure. At the time, the news reported it was a SAM. If it is true about the MIG, it is the first and only air-to-air loss we've had since Vietnam.
